As an agency with diverse roles and responsibilities, the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) employs around 1900 staff as permanent staffers, contractors, casual and seasonal workers and trainees in cities and towns as well as in some of the most remote areas of the State. In fact, DEC is among the most decentralised State Government agencies with approximately three-quarters of its workforce employed in country areas. Besides its Perth Offices, DEC operates from nine regional and nearly 20 district centres, as well as from a number of other locations. DEC endeavours to support its staff with training, safety and support programs, career development opportunities, as well as to promote continual improvement, teamwork and flexibility to its workforce. DEC is a Registered Training Organisation, which means staff and trainees gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of certified trainers and are able to obtain a Technical and Further Education qualification. DEC also has a comprehensive and inclusive trainee and employment scheme. A particular focus is the commitment to the employment of Indigenous people and DEC aims to have 10 to 15 per cent of the department's workforce made up of Aboriginal people by 2013. This joint management initiative was a Government priority in terms of reconciliation and providing long-term, secure employment for Indigenous Western Australians.
