Outback safety and survival courses
Why does DEC conduct the course?

This course is ideal for adults interested in bushwalking, bushcraft, camping, 4WD, amateur prospecting, work placement in the bush, or those travelling into the country or remote areas.

The course will show you skills and demonstrate attitudes that encourage sound planning and preparation for any trip you make to the bush. If plans do go wrong, the survival skills you learn could help prevent a mishap becoming a tragedy.

Basic Survival Courses 2009

Conducted in the Perth and Dwellingup forest of WA

Survival situations can not be anticipated, they just happen. Whether or not you survive such a situation largely depends on the decisions you make in the first few hours. Your decisions can be made easier if you have had some training in what is known as bush survival.

That's what this course is all about - preventing a mishap from becoming a tragedy?

Please do not let the first time you need to try out your survival skills - be in an actual situation.

Subjects covered include:

  • Psychology of survival
  • Map reading and navigation
  • Water procurement techniques
  • Alternative fire-lighting methods
  • Edible and medicinal plants
  • Avoiding poisoning by toxic vegetation
  • Stellar and solar navigation
  • Modern and traditional survival skills
  • Snake awareness
  • Useful and harmful sea coast creatures
  • Day and night signals
  • Plus many more useful lessons to make your outings safer.

The course fee: $695.00 (includes GST) per person

Your fee includes:

  • Theory day at a Training Centre near Perth - icon view/download Location Map (66.65 kB)
