Working at DEC

As an agency with diverse roles and responsibilities, the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) employs around 1900 people as permanent staffers, contractors, casual and seasonal workers and trainees in cities and towns as well as in some of the most remote areas of the State. In fact, DEC is among the most decentralised State Government agencies with approximately three-quarters of its workforce employed in country areas.

Besides its Perth Offices, DEC operates from nine regional and nearly 20 district centres, as well as from a number of other locations.

Staff work in the field, in offices and in laboratories, and on a range of programs and projects dealing with environmental protection, plants, animals and people.

In addition to the attractive salary and the opportunity to contribute to biodiversity and environmental conservation initiatives, DEC offers a number of incentives including:

  • an attractive salary packaging scheme
  • flexible working arrangements
  • well-established learning and development programs
  • comprehensive health and lifestyle programs
  • subsidised corporate wardrobe
  • a National Park Entry Pass, and
  • an opportunity to work in iconic locations throughout Western Australia.

DEC endeavours to support its staff with comprehensive training, safety and support programs, career development opportunities, as well as to promote continual improvement, teamwork and flexibility within its workforce.

DEC is a Registered Training Organisation, which means staff and trainees can gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of certified trainers and obtain Technical and Further Education qualifications.

DEC also has a comprehensive and inclusive trainee and employment scheme. A particular focus is the commitment to the employment of Indigenous people and DEC aims to have 10 to 15 per cent of the department's workforce made up of Aboriginal people by 2013. This joint management initiative was a Government priority in terms of reconciliation and providing long-term, secure employment for Indigenous Western Australians.

DEC is a highly sought after employer, receiving employment applications from all around the world, from people who are qualified in a variety of disciplines, for a variety of positions.
