Pollution prevention

The Department of Environment and Conservation has strong regulatory powers which it uses to manage and protect the environment, particularly in areas where human activities have the potential to pollute or otherwise impact on the quality of air, land or water.

The department is responsible for:

  • regulating emissions and discharges to the environment - usually known as pollution - through licensing and asessment
  • monitoring ambient air quality and developing air quality management plans for priority areas
  • managing the transport of hazardous wastes
  • regulating the investigation, classification and management of contaminated sites
  • developing and implementing environmental noise policies, and
  • developing and implementing policies and strategies to avoid and minimise waste.
