Spending a night or two out in the bush can be good for the soul and a great way to spend time with friends and family. There are places throughout the State on land managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation where camping is welcomed.
How do I find a place to camp?
Camping on DEC estate is only permitted at designated campsites. There are some easily accessed, developed campsites with toilets, picnic tables and camp kitchen scattered throughout the south-west. Other more isolated sites may only provide basic facilities, but are more removed from busy tourist areas. Consult DEC Campgrounds
to find out what camping facilities are available in specific parks.
Alternatively, phone the DEC office in the area you wish to visit. A
park and visitor services officer will provide all the advice you will
need to find a suitable campsite.
While at your designated campground:
- Camp in existing cleared areas, but please don't clear new areas.
- Some areas of the south-west have total fire bans (including campfires) all summer. In areas where campfires are permitted, don't light them on hot windy days. Better still, reduce the potential for a bushfire by using portable fuel stoves at all times.
- Take your rubbish home with you. If you can carry it in you can carry it out.
- Not all campsites allow the use of generators. Please check the Guidelines to Generator Use at Campsites information sheet to find out which campsites allow generators and what hours they can be operated
Please observe the following regulations for camping on DEC estate:
- Please pay all fees at reception area or fee station provided. Before setting up camp.
- Keep your campsite clean and tidy at all times.
- Camp fires:
- Permitted in designated campsites only.
- Wood is provided on site.
- DO NOT scavenge wood from the bush.
- Non-combustibles must not be thrown into fireplaces
- No wood fires during Total Fire Ban. Signs will indicate these times.
- Extinguish fires completely before going to bed and when vacating the site.
- Please RESPECT other campers! All noise to be kept to a minimum.
- Please vacate your campsite by 10am on day of departure.
- Confine vehicles to defined parking areas and reduce speeds in camping areas to walking pace (max 10km/h).
