DEC responds to serious pollution incidents, taking action to stop the discharge, minimise enviro n mental harm, direct clean-up works and collect evidence of environmental offences.
DEC maintains a Pollution Response (HAZMAT) Unit (PRU) in Perth that can be deployed quickly around the state in the event of major pollution incidents.
DEC Regional Offices also have ability to respond to pollution incidents and can obtain support from PRU as required.
Local governments generally manage minor pollution issues and nuisances.

 DEC does NOT deal with:

Fish kills:

To report a fish kill, algal bloom, pollution or other incident in the Swan/Canning River,
contact Swan River Trust on (08) 9278 0900 during office hours, or
041 919 2845 for after hours emergencies.

Sick or injured Wildlife:

Hazardous chemical information:

National Chemicals Information Gateway has information on a wide range of household and commercial chemicals.
The Department's Pollution Response Unit (PRU) provides:
  • trained personnel to respond to major pollution emergencies 24/7
  • on-scene hazardous materials identification, impact assessment, sampling and monitoring during pollution incidents and emergencies
  • air monitoring during chemical releases and hazardous materials fires to determine the potential impact on the environment and public health
  • environmental advice to the emergency services during pollution incidents
  • advice on containment and clean-up of hazardous waste incidents
  • training in pollution incident response
  • collection of evidence of environmental offences
  • rnforcement action for environmental offences
  • assessment of environmental impacts from clandestine drug laboratories
  • preventative inspections of industries that could potentially pollute the environment.
