Wildlife rehabilitation and courses

Print

In Western Australia, the Wildlife Conservation Act and Regulations provide for the conservation and protection of wildlife and govern the activities of wildlife rehabilitators.

Regulation 28A states that a person may temporarily keep in captivity fauna that is sick, injured, diseased or abandoned until it recovers or can fend for itself. The recovered animal must be released to a place where it is ordinarily found in the wild. The Department of Environment and Conservation in Western Australia (DEC) is responsible for implementing this legislation as it applies to the management of wildlife.

To help DEC implement the legislation effectively, the department offers courses and support for wildlife rehabilitators on an on-going basis.

DEC also provides guidance on standards for wildlife rehabilitation, including the document Minimum Standards for Wildlife Rehabilitation in Western Australia 2008.
