Fire Awareness

Camp Sites

All camp sites from and including Mt Chance South to Hidden Valley are fuel stove only camp sites. Camp fires are not permitted at anytime of the year at these locations.

Fuel Reductions Burns

Fuel Reductions Burns are conducted during spring and autumn each year. Burning is undertaken for a variety of reasons, including property protection, fuel reduction and biodiversity management.

Fuel reduction burns are dependent on appropriate weather conditions and as such, dates for operations are not available in advance.

Where a burn may affect the Bibbulmun Track, measures to ensure the safety of Track users have been planned. Temporary diversions will be put in place, including temporary campsites where necessary. Measures will remain in place until the regular Track alignment has been declared safe by DEC officers.

Follow signs, marked diversions and instructions from DEC officers.

Verve Energy's Grasmere Wind Farm  is now complete. As part of this project, the Bibbulmun Track has been realigned and the Hidden Valley campsite has been removed.

Two new campsites ‘Sandpatch' and ‘Muttonbird' have been built to accommodate the realignment and removal of Hidden Valley campsite.

Please be advised of the following distances and plan your journey accordingly:

  • 13km between Albany and Sandpatch campsite

  • 13km between Sandpatch campsite and Muttonbird campsite

  • 12km between Muttonbird Campsite and Torbay campsite

For your safety please follow the marked trail and all other signage.

Map 8b Torbay Inlet

Torbay Inlet channel is rarely more than a knee deep, however it can reach 1m deep during peak flows. For many months of the year it is easily traversed as the channel is blocked completely by a sand bar. When the channel is open the crossing can be waded using extreme caution. If on inspection the water appears to be flowing too swiftly you may seek an alternative crossing point further upstream where although deeper the current may not be so strong. If you have any doubts at all about the depth of the water and wading across then you should take the alternative route, marked in light green on the map by walking around via lower Denmark Road.

Groups on Track

Groups on Track

Any group with eight or more members is requested to submit a 'Notification of Intent' form to DEC's Recreation and Trails Unit 4 weeks prior to the expedition. Forms can be obtained by contacting the Recreation and Trails Unit on (08) 9334 0265, emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   or downloading the pdf link below. This can be printed and faxed to (08) 9334 0100.

Group size should be set at a maximum number of 17 participants, including leaders andall members should carry tents. This number has been set to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the Track, camp sites, facilities and the surrounding environment.

Camp sites on the Bibbulmun Track cannot be booked. Therefore, the Notification of Intent form is not a booking system. However, the information is important to help manage and record group usage and to inform other walkers to assist their planning. The Recreation and Trails Unit thanks all the groups who have sent in notification forms, it is very much appreciated.
