Threatened flora, fauna and ecological communities data

Print

The Department maintains a list of taxa which are threatened with extinction (Declared Rare Flora and Threatened Fauna) and taxa that may be rare or threatened but for which there are insufficient survey data to accurately determine their status, or are regarded as rare but are not currently threatened (Priority flora and fauna). A list is also maintained for threatened and priority ecological communities.

Information is gathered regarding the locations of populations of threatened and priority flora and fauna and occurrences of threatened and priority communities. This information is entered into Departmental databases to help protect and conserve these species and communities.

Can I request threatened flora fauna and ecological communities’ data from DEC?

The Department provides a service (free for non-commercial purposes) that allows people to find out if there are any known Threatened and Priority Fauna, Flora or Ecological Communities at or near an area of interest.  This information is particularly useful to anyone planning for development or other activities that may affect threatened wildlife.  You may need a licence to access the land and undertake any further study of the species, or ecological community.

Requests for this information should be made to the Department’s Species and Communities Branch.  Please read the information sheet on data searches for contact details and search requirements: icon Flora, Fauna and Ecological Community Data Searches - November 2011 (152 kB)

The level of information that can be obtained about the threatened species and communities will depend on what the data will be used for and how the data will be presented. Please note that the locations of threatened species and communities are confidential for conservation reasons and to ensure landowner privacy.  Conditions apply to the supply of this data.

Where else can I get threatened flora fauna and ecological communities’ data from?

If basic information is required regarding threatened species and ecological communities then the following free tools may be useful.

 FloraBase

Descriptions, images and maps of threatened flora can be accessed through the WA Herbarium’s online Database FloraBase.  This website integrates data from a number of datasets including the Census of Western Australian Plants, the Western Australian Herbarium specimen database, and descriptive data and interactive keys for the families, genera and species of vascular plant in Western Australia. For more information about FloraBase go to the FloraBase website.

 NatureMap

Basic information on Threatened and Priority Flora/Fauna can also be accessed through the online mapping tool NatureMap. This information is sourced from the Department’s Threatened Flora Database (DEFL), Threatened Fauna Database, the WA Herbarium’s specimen database (WAHERB) and the WA Museum’s specimen database. Each of these databases are constantly being updated or added to so the data you access using NatureMap is the most up-to-date data available.
