The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is closing the Old Telegraph Track from Point Culver to Toolinna Cove.

DEC Esperance District Manager Klaus Tiedemann said a fire started by lightning had been burning in Nuytsland Nature Reserve for 10 days.

"It has burnt about 30,000 hectares of mostly mallee and heath vegetation on both sides of the Old Telegraph Track and fallen timber debris has made this section of the track impassable," he said.

"The fire is still active so it is not possible to clear the track at this stage.

"We advise visitors to this remote area to detour around Toolinna Cove and to use the Eyre Highway between Caiguna and the Point Culver - Eyre Highway turn-off."

Mr Tiedemann said the fire was being monitored by DEC.

"The track will be reopened once the fire is declared safe and all the debris on the track has been cleared," he said.

"DEC apologises for any inconvenience caused by this track closure."

For more information about this closure contact the DEC Esperance District Office on 9083 2100.
