Tips for more sustainable living

How can I help? Why does it matter? Where can I find out more?
Energy
  • Turn off lights and reduce unnecessary electricity use.
  • Buy Green Power for some or all of your electricity.
  • Use energy-efficient lighting, appliences and hot water systems.
  • Use fans, insulation and gas heating as cheaper ways to cool and heat your home.

Our energy use is often wasteful and can impact the environment through greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change.

Water
  • Reduce wasteful water use. For example, have shorter showers.
  • Fix faulty plumbing and install water wise showers and taps.
  • Use low water use appliances, such as washing mashines.
  • Grow a water wise garden.
  • Consider installing a rainwater tank or greywater reuse system.

Wise water use is a way to help maintain adequate fresh water resources for the community and the environment.

Waste
  • Avoid excess packaging and use a reuseable bag when shopping.
  • Recycle packaging and other items.
  • Donate unwanted items to charities.
  • Use compost systems or worm farms for food scraps and garden waste.
  • Correctly dispose of household hazardous wastes and batteries.

Avoiding waste where possible, encouraging reuse, recycling and proper waste disposal are all ways to reduce society's impact on the environment.

Transport
  • Walk, cycle or use public transport where possible.
  • If you use a car, try to car pool with friends or co-workers.
  • Optimise car use activities to reduce your number of car trips.
  • Consider buying a fuel efficient car and service your car regularly.
  • Consider buying carbon offsets when travelling by air.

Improving the way we go about our daily lives can reduce fuel use, which decreases pollution such as greenhouse gas emissions and smog, while also reducing household costs.

  • Think about sustainability when purchasing or improving your home.
  • When you can, buy locally and purchase locally made goods and produce.

Good community health, more sustainable buildings and a more supportive society can contribute to a community's sustainability.
