Tourism certificates are on the minds of more than 70 Balga students who come to Yanchep National Park to learn. Seventy-one Balga Senior High School students from years 8 to 12 have started tourism sessions in the park as part of their Certificate II in Tourism. The course is part of the Swan Nyungar Sports Education Project which provides educational opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in the areas of Culture and Sport. Yanchep National Park’s Aboriginal and Islander Educational Officer Derek Nannup said a range of topics were covered. "The students are taught in the areas of Aboriginal dance, music, tool and weapon making, performance and presentation." The weekly program lasts for one semester and by the end of this time, the students will be able to present their own tourism activity. "I anticipate that the students will be able to deliver their own Aboriginal Experience program by the end of the course," Mr Nannup said. "The experience at the national park provides an opportunity for the children to have a greater appreciation of their own culture and learn tourism basics at the same time." |
