An online visitor's guide to Western Australia's parks, reserves and other recreation areas.

Introduction:
Barrow Island Marine Park was established by the State Government in 2004. Like the nearby Barrow Island Marine Management Area and Montebello Islands Marine Park, the park is a significant breeding and nesting area for marine turtles and its waters support important coral reefs and a diversity of tropical marine animals.
A sanctuary zone covers 100 per cent of the Barrow Island Marine Park, giving the 4100-hectare park the highest percentage of 'no take' areas of any marine park in Western Australia.
Sanctuary zones are ‘look but don’t take’ areas managed for nature conservation and low-impact recreation and tourism. Sanctuary zones are important for reserve management, as they provide relatively ‘undisturbed’ sites for comparison with surrounding areas that are subject to extractive activities. Sanctuary zones are also important refuge areas for marine life, and help to replenish adjacent areas.
The area lies within the State’s most productive petroleum region.
