Print

A fundamental part of the MPRA’s statutory function as outlined in s26B of the Conservation and Land Management Act 1984 is to -

s26B (f)  in relation to management plans for land and waters vested in the Marine Authority -

  1. to develop guidelines for monitoring the implementation of the management plans by the Department;
  2. to set performance criteria for evaluating the carrying out of the management plans; and
  3. to conduct periodic assessments of the implementation of the management plans.

The MPRA audit process has been formulated in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC). Annual audits of management plans have been undertaken by the MPRA since 2002/2003 and more recently periodic and 10-yearly audits have been conducted.

The MPRA implement the audit process through three levels of review:

  1. an Annual Audit of each marine park management plan;
  2. a Periodic Audit (nominally 3 to 5-yearly) of each marine park management plan based on preceding Annual Audits; and
  3. a 10-yearly Audit of each marine park management plan based on preceding
    Annual and Periodic Audits.

All reviews are facilitated by the MPRA Audit Committee.
