Following a public comment period which closed on 11 September 2006, the Burrup Peninsula Conservation Reserve Management Plan is being finalised. The draft management plan was prepared under the direction of the Burrup Peninsula Conservation Reserve Planning Advisory Committee, in consultation with the community, and in accordance with the Burrup and Maitland Industrial Estates Agreement Implementation Deed 2003 between the State of WA and the traditional custodians of the Burrup Peninsula. Under the Agreement, 62 per cent of the Burrup Peninsula (the non-industrial lands) will be jointly managed by the traditional custodians and the Department of Environment and Conservation (formerly CALM) as a conservation reserve to protect the area's cultural and natural values. The draft management plan provides for cooperative management of the proposed conservation reserve, including access and the provision of facilities for visitors, tourism development, and education and interpretation of the cultural values of the Burrup Peninsula.
