As well as technical reports, guidelines, evaluations and the Wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain series, much work has been done on developing policies and position statements to define the importance of wetlands in Western Australia.

Wetlands Conservation Policy for Western Australia

The Wetlands Conservation Policy for Western Australia (Government of Western Australia, 1997) is the Western Australian Government’s commitment regarding the management of WA wetlands. It provides broad objectives for wetlands, waterways, estuaries and shallow marine areas. It also provides an implementation strategy specifically for the management of wetlands in WA.

Policy - Wetlands Position Statement

The Wetlands Position Statement was prepared by the Water and Rivers Commission for the wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain. It was prepared to clarify the Commission’s position on the management and protection of wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain and how this related to development in the region. It should be read in the context of ecologically sustainable development consistent with the principles outlined in the State Wetlands Conservation Policy for Western Australia (1997) and environmental best management practices. The statement briefly summarises the classification, evaluation and management categories of wetlands, along with the management requirements. It includes buffer requirements based on the proposed land use.
