Planning marine parks and reserves

Planning marine parks and reserves is an extensive process involving many steps and participants. The Marine Parks and Reserves Authority (MPRA), in which Western Australian marine parks and reserves are vested (ie. legally entrusted), provides advice to the Minister for the Environment on the establishment and proposed management of the statewide system of marine parks and reserves. This advice is, primarily, in the form of indicative management plans (IMP) that are developed by the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), in consultation with local communities and stakeholders, on behalf of the MPRA.

Community involvement is central to the planning process and DEC seeks input through community-based advisory committees, or other participation mechanisms, and comprehensive consultation with key stakeholders.
