The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is continuing its investigation into the deaths of 261 sea gulls recently found at and around Woodman Point in the Cockburn area. Two of these deaths occurred this week.

Scientific tests are being carried out on tissue and water samples at a Queensland laboratory and the WA Chemistry Centre.

Acting Manager Nature Protection Kevin Morrison said DEC will continue to investigate the incident until the cause of death is found or until all avenues are exhausted but it is difficult to put a timeframe on it.

"The scientific tests being carried out are rigorous and methodical and the fact is that science takes time," Mr Morrison said.

"At this stage, it’s not helpful to speculate about the cause of the deaths or the source of that cause but once definitive results are provided to DEC these will be publicly released."
