Exploring climate change in the classroom
Scientific data strongly suggests that the Earth is warming as a result of
human activities. Climate change has involved a steady rise in annual, global
mean temperatures and the onset of more extreme weather events, including longer
and more severe droughts, heatwaves, severe storms and more powerful cyclones,
hurricanes and typhoons.
The impacts of climate change are many and varied. Physical environments are
changing - glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, violent storms are more
common place, and plants and animals are responding to the earlier onset of
spring.
Natural environments are also changing. Coral reefs are threatened with
rising sea temperatures and by increased water acidity caused by higher levels
of CO2 in our oceans.
Climate change educational resources
The following resources have been prepared to engage students and their
teachers in exploring some aspects of global climate change.
Separate sets of resources have been devised for the Primary and Secondary
level. These resources are designed to:
- help you learn about the enhanced Greenhouse Effect,
- discover the physical, social and economic impacts of climate change through
inquiries and case studies of places as diverse as your local community,
Antarctica and Lake Chad in Africa, and
- encourage students to commit to ways of reducing their own greenhouse gases
emissions.
