Mitigation

Print

The reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is generally referred to as emissions mitigation or GHG abatement.

Even though the effects of increased GHG emissions over the past hundred years are "locked" in and it is becoming increasingly evident that our climate is changing, we need to reduce our production of GHG emissions in order to limit the rate of further climate change.

Initial climate change policy responses and actions tended to focus primarily on emissions mitigation, but governments are now increasingly adopting a two-pronged approach: reducing emissions as well as adapting communities to the unavoidable impacts of climate change.

Emissions mitigation can be undertaken by all groups in society (governments, households, businesses, etc) and in numerous ways, for example through increasing energy efficiency, adopting low emissions technologies, changing our transport patterns and reducing waste.
