Aboriginal Heritage Unit

Aboriginal Heritage Unit learning activities The Aboriginal Heritage Unit programs help fulfil outcomes of the curriculum framework across all learning areas, particularly The Arts, English, Science & Society and Environment.

Staff from DEC's Aboriginal Heritage Unit are available to provide educational talks , experiences and activities on their Nyoongar culture in the classroom, local bush and river/wetland settings.

Programs available

  • At the School (click on the menu at the left for details)
    Choose a combination of activities (most take an hour each) or choose a school day where a variety of activities can be presented.
  • Wankinying Boodjah (talking land) (suitable for upper primary to secondary level).
    take a stroll through the bush discovering native plants once used for food and bush medicine. Hear more about the Aboriginal six seasons and why Aboriginal people moved around depending on the season.
  • River/Wetlands (suitable for upper primary to secondary level)
    Learn about the importance of the river system to the Nyoongar people
  • Walyunga NP
    Nyoongar tools and tales (suitable for secondary level only)
    Explore this archaeological site on the banks of the Upper Swan River where Nyoongar groups gathered to make stone tools, share stories and ceremonies and live off the local bushtucker.
  • The Perth Hills National Park Centre, Mundaring

Cost

School group charges
$110 for the first hour (covers travel, preparation costs and park fees where applicable)

$77 for each additional hour (or part hour) for one Heritage Officer.
For outdoor activities one Heritage Officer is required for every 30 students or one class. A day rate of $330 applies for one Heritage Officer depending on participant numbers.

Travel, accommodation and meals outside the metropolitan area involves additional charges.
