DEC Science Division has a library comprising three main collections in the Perth metropolitan area. These collections are based at Woodvale, Kensington, and the WA Herbarium.

Library Catalogue

The library catalogue is searchable online. It will provide the location of the material required. In August 2009, the library catalogue had more than 164 000 records consisting of over:

  • 32400 book/report titles
  • 1700 journal/newsletter titles (453 current)
  • 11700 monographic journals
  • 27400 reprints
  • 72900 indexed journal articles and book chapters
  • 3300 pamphlets
  • 3000 links to online resources
  • 7000 PDFs linked to catalogue records

Access to general public and students

The Kensington and Woodvale collections are accessible for public access (see specific hours below). The Herbarium collection is not open to the public, but titles can be viewed at either of the 2 other locations with prior arrangements. Direct borrowing is only available through the Inter-Library loan system, which means material can be borrowed via other libraries, i.e. public or university library. The Libraries have photocopiers which may be used by with a charge of 25 cents per A4 sheet. Users of the photocopiers are reminded that breaches of the Copyright Act are criminal offences

Wildlife Science Collection (Woodvale)

The Wildlife Science Collection at Woodvale holds the main stock of books and journals on the environment, ecology, conservation, wildlife, national parks and nature reserves. The Departmental Archives are held at Woodvale, where a comprehensive range of materials (books, journals, reports, reprints, videos, photos, maps, aerial photos etc.) produced by Departmental officers or produced for the Department and its departmental predecessors (eg, CALM, Forests Department) are retained permanently. These are not for loan.

Forest Science Collection (Kensington)

The Forest Science Collection at Kensington holds the main stock of books and journals on forestry. A small special collection on environmental education is held for teachers and the video collection is housed here, as are Departmental publications, WA statutes and an uncatalogued collection of coloured slides and historical photos.

Public access: 13.00-16.30 by appointment only Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. This library is closed on Wednesdays.

WA Herbarium Collection (WA Herbarium)

The W.A. Herbarium Collection contains material on botanical subjects for use by botanists. The collection's emphasis is on systematic botany and related disciplines. As well as books and journals, there are microfiche, original illustrations, maps, coloured slides of native plants and an extensive collection of journal articles and reprints.
